The arithmetic of compounding is taught to teenagers. The behaviour it requires is managed successfully by very few adults, and the gap between those two facts is most of what separates good long-term outcomes from average ones.
The difficulty is not understanding. It is that compounding pays almost nothing for a long time and then pays enormously, and the long time is spent watching other people do better with worse ideas.
